How Much Does a Psychedelic Retreat Really Cost? (AUD)

The price you see on a retreat operator’s website is rarely the total cost for an Australian traveller. This guide breaks down the actual cost components — use our cost calculator tool for a specific destination-and-tier estimate.

The components

Program price. Among the operators we’ve reviewed, this ranges roughly from the AUD equivalent of $4,500 (a shorter Peru ayahuasca program) to $14,000+ (a longer or higher-tier psilocybin program), before anything else. Room type (shared vs. private) commonly moves the price within an operator’s own range significantly — Beckley Retreats, for example, publishes a price band that varies by several thousand USD depending on room type alone.

International flights. Return economy flights from Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane run roughly AUD $1,800–2,800 to the Netherlands, and higher — often $2,400–4,000 — to Jamaica or Peru, reflecting less direct routing. This is frequently the second-largest cost after the program itself and is almost always excluded from the headline price.

Travel insurance. Budget roughly AUD $100–300 depending on age, trip length, and existing conditions — and specifically confirm the policy covers the retreat activity itself; some insurers exclude plant-medicine ceremonies or list them as an exclusion requiring a rider.

Buffer accommodation. Most sensible itineraries build in at least one extra night before and after the program to manage jet lag and long-haul travel fatigue, at roughly AUD $150–400/night depending on destination.

Time off work. Not a cash cost, but a real one — factor in the total time commitment including travel days, not just the in-person retreat length, when weighing this against annual leave.

Putting the above together, an Australian traveller might realistically budget (program + flights + insurance + buffer nights, excluding integration add-ons or pre/post travel):

None of these figures include: pre-retreat consultations some operators charge for separately, post-retreat integration sessions beyond what’s bundled, domestic connecting flights within the destination country (relevant for Peru specifically, where Iquitos requires a domestic leg from Lima), or any follow-up therapy you choose to pursue at home.
