The Retreat Vetting Checklist: 12 Questions to Ask
This is the expanded, personal-research version of the six-item vetting checklist shown on every listing on this site. Use it as a literal question list to put to an operator before booking, by email or in a call.
Legal & structural
- What is your specific legal basis for operating in this jurisdiction? A reputable operator can answer this precisely (see our legal guide for what a good answer sounds like for each destination) — vagueness here is a signal.
- How long have you been operating, and under what business entity? Operators with a documented, stable history are lower-risk than very new or frequently-renamed entities. (We flag this specifically for one operator in this directory whose corporate history includes a well-documented 2023 financial collapse — check our note on their listing.)
Screening & medical
- What does your intake/screening process actually involve, and who reviews it? Look for a named medical or psychological reviewer, not just a form.
- What conditions or medications would disqualify someone? A specific contraindication list (certain psychiatric diagnoses, certain medications, pregnancy, specific cardiovascular conditions) is a stronger answer than “we assess case by case” with no detail.
- What’s your rejection/deferral rate, if you track it? Operators that genuinely screen out unsuitable applicants can often give you a rough figure; operators that accept nearly everyone who pays typically can’t or won’t.
Facilitation
- Who are the facilitators, and what’s their specific training? Ask for names and credentials, not just “experienced team.”
- What’s the facilitator-to-participant ratio? Lower ratios generally mean more individual attention during and after the experience.
- Is a medical professional present during the session itself, or only reachable? These are meaningfully different levels of safety provision.
Safety & emergency
- What’s your specific emergency protocol, including evacuation to a hospital? The strongest answers name a specific nearby facility and describe transport time and method, not just “we have a plan.”
- Do you carry appropriate emergency equipment on-site (for example, an AED, oxygen, or equivalent depending on modality)?
Reputation & transparency
- Can you point me to independent reviews, not just testimonials on your own site? Google, Trustpilot, or established third-party retreat directories are more useful than curated on-site testimonials alone.
- What exactly is included in the price, and what costs extra? See our cost guide for the categories to ask about specifically.
A note on how to read the answers
No single weak answer is necessarily disqualifying — but a pattern of vagueness across multiple questions, especially the factual ones (3, 4, 6, 9), is worth taking seriously. This list is deliberately about specificity of answer, not just whether an operator says yes.
If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available right now: Lifeline 13 11 14, 24/7. In an emergency, call 000.
Frequently asked questions
Why 12 questions and not the 6 items on the listing checklist?
The six-item checklist on each listing is what we can verify is publicly stated on the operator's own materials. This guide's 12 questions are what we'd suggest you personally ask before booking — a more thorough, personal-decision-level list than what we can practically fact-check for every listing.
What's a red flag answer?
Vagueness on the specific, factual questions (screening criteria, emergency evacuation plan, facilitator names and training) is a bigger red flag than an honest 'we don't have that' on the softer questions. Confident vagueness is worse than an honest gap.
